STPI-Guwahati is one of the nine STPI jurisdictions having its main centre in Guwahati, Assam.
STPI–Guwahati centre was established in 2000 to fulfil the objective of organisation like implementing STP/EHTP Schemes, setting up & managing infrastructure facilities, and providing other services like technology assessment and project management consultancy in North East Region.
Presently STPI-Guwahati has 10 sub-centres in Agartala, Aizawl, Durgapur, Gangtok, Haldia, Imphal, Kharagpur, Kolkata, Shillong, and Siliguri. In FY 2020-21, STPI-registered units under STPI-Guwahati jurisdiction contributed Rs. 7,433.52 crore software exports.
STPI-Guwahati Centre become operational in 2000 and started providing statutory services to IT /ITeS units registered under the STP Scheme and hardware manufacturing units under EHTP Scheme. In 2000, STPI-Guwahati approved 30 units.
The Role of STPI in the growth of the IT industry has been tremendous, especially in the case of start-up SMEs. STP scheme the catalyst The STP scheme is a 100 percent export-oriented scheme for the development and export of computer software, including export of professional services using communication links or physical media. This scheme is unique in its nature as it focuses on one product/sector, i.e. computer software. The scheme integrates the government concept of 100 percent Export Oriented Units (EOUs) and Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and the concept of Science Parks/Technology Parks, as operating elsewhere in the world. The total exports from the STPI-registered units under STPI-Guwahati in FY 2020-21 touches Rs. 7,433.52 crore.
OctaNE, an internetworked group of 8 CoEs & SIZs at the 8 capital cities of North East including IoT in Agriculture CoE/SIZ at Guwahati, Emerging Tech (AR/VR) CoE/SIZ at Imphal, Gaming & Animation CoE/SIZ at Shillong, Data Analytics & AI CoE/SIZ at Agartala, IT Applications in Graphics Design CoE/SIZ at Kohima, IT Application in Healthcare & AgriTech CoE/SIZ at Gangtok, Gaming & Entertainment CoE/SIZ at Aizwal & GIS Applications (including Drone Technology) CoE/SIZ at Itanagar. STPI plans to foster 367 startups in 5 years in the areas of IoT in Agriculture, Emerging Tech (AR/VR), Gaming & Animation, Data Analytics & AI, IT Applications in Graphics Design, IT Application in Healthcare & AgriTech, Gaming & Entertainment & GIS Applications (including Drone Technology).
OctaNE has been incubating startups in new and emerging technologies in the areas of electronics and IT while providing a robust platform for startups, with single umbrella support services like mentorship services, seed capital assistance, marketing support (including IPR protection) etc. This CoE will create employment opportunities in new innovative startup units, develop a tinkering and innovation culture amongst students and professionals by establishing innovation zones for startups, and facilitate E-Commerce activities and applications.
STPI has expanded its presence pan-India since its inception in 1991 with 3 centres to disperse tech-driven entrepreneurship to Tier-II/III cities. Today, STPI has 61 centres of which 53 centres are in Tier-II/III cities. These centres have been playing a pivotal role in boosting IT/ITeS/ESDM exports from the respective region, generating employment, and fostering startups to develop software products.
